I’m not sure I know what I’m doing here. And by “here,” I mean on Substack. But I guess the sentiment can apply generally at this point. (The above photo will attest to that fact.)
This message is popping up in your inbox because you were already signed up to what I suppose was the Without A Path newsletter. In practice, I just shared what was new in my world with a smattering of links to anything I recently wrote, filmed, or recorded.
I started writing this post up as a brainstorming exercise. I spelled out the various avenues I could take this newsletter into and was going to leave it up to you to decide what I do with it.
After writing it all down, I ended up making the decision myself.
From now on, this space/newsletter will focus on the stories I feel like telling. Why learning Yiddish has made me start to resent German, what pampushky is and how to make it, and stories from the occasionally passive aggressive WhatsApp group chat my apartment building uses.
That’s what you can expect to fine here and (cue the reverb) SO! MUCH! MORE!
Don’t be mistaken. I’m still as shameless as any writer/creator who wants to keep writing/creating. So I’ll continue to find inartful ways to share what’s new, usually by way of forced segues or comparison.
Example: Soul was a touching, thought-provoking movie. SPEAKING OF MOVIES, I recently wrote about a short-film by the name of “Masel Tov Cocktail” that satirizes German perceptions of young Jews in Germany.
If I’m feeling especially lazy, I might just drop things in a list, like these recent episodes of the Travel Tomorrow podcast:
Whatever happens next, I do hope you’ll stick around and even share with a friend.
Because I think what comes next will be infinitenly more entertaining and even accidentally insightful compared to what used to show up in your inbox. I’ll be writing it because I want to, because something happened and I felt compelled to share it. That’s always better than doing something because a Google Calendar reminder went off and you realize it’s been a while.
That said, I’m open to suggestions. If there’s something you want to see here, just tell me or leave a comment. I remain at the end of the day a barely evolved monkey in overalls who will dance with cymbals if it’ll make you smile.
